As we begin a new year, it’s always tempting to have a look back at the previous 12 months. Of course, the past year has been another difficult one for many of us, but there were still some inevitable ‘water cooler moments’ that sparked conversations in offices up and down the land. Here’s a roundup of some of the best or funniest moments of 2021!
1. England Football Team
The England men’s team did the nation proud by reaching the final of the delayed Euro 2020 competition. Great sporting moments never fail to set off conversations and bring the nation together, and Gareth Southgate’s men certainly provided plenty to talk about.
Having led the team all the way to Wembley, the Lions experienced the heartbreaking but perhaps inevitable defeat on penalties to Italy. Still, there’s always the World Cup at Qatar in 2022 to look forward to.
2. Emma Raducanu winning the US Open
Keeping up the sporting achievements for the girls, the amazing 18-year-old Emma Raducanu rose from obscurity to win a stunning victory at the US Open. She became the first British woman to take a Grand Slam singles title since Virginia Wade in 1977. She looks set to have a brilliant career, and won the British Sports Personality of the Year Award.
3. Pubgoers snowed in for 3 days with an Oasis tribute band
Depending on your worldview, being snowed up in a country pub with an Oasis tribute act for three days will either be your idea of heaven, or hell on earth. Whatever your view on the matter, that’s what happened to customers at the Tan Hill Inn in the Yorkshire Dales.
After a blizzard left 61 people stranded at Britain’s highest pub in late November, the landlady said that everyone had a brilliant time, and bonded over karaoke, quizzes, and board games, and hopefully a free pint or two.
